I’m absolutely amazed and delighted by the way in which thousands and thousands of people have spontaneously agreed to invent a movie and, without actively discussing it in any way, have very quickly come to agreements on not just overall themes but the characters names, plot points and even specific scenes. Everyone has just accepted that the director is Matteo JWHJ0715, a man who’s mother was Italian and father was a licence plate.
There’s over 450 fanfictions on AO3 that are tagging themselves as to whether their fic is cannon compliment or not. For a movie that doesn’t exist. Scorsese’s Wikipedia page has had to be locked because people kept adding it to his filmography.
It’s fantastic and could probably be used as a basis for a collage thesis on human… colabritive behaviour?? Like, we could all sit down and talk about it and agree on themes etc but no one is. It’s all through tumblr posts that become popular because they’re funny, are framed particularly well, have an interesting theme/scene idea etc. Like, it’s almost a democratic in how it’s coming together but it’s much faster and there’s no typical voting structure and no leaders. Like, one of my mutuals added the ice-pick Joe thing and now it’s ‘cannon’.
Makes me think of humans thousands of years ago making up stories and spreading them by retelling, adding and removing themes and scenes at each retelling until it coalesces into a full story. It’s absolutely delightful and I love it.
